Record of Operations
In 2009 our rescue craft were called for assistance 2138 times, and our men were able to save 123 lives; another 972 people were freed or protected from serious danger.
The number of persons rescued by our rescue units from the initial foundation of the institution on May 29, 1865, has now reached a total of 76.610.
In 941 cases not only the crew but also their vessel was salvaged or could be given essential assistance during the past year.
The above figures do not cover the landing of injured or sick persons from ships or islands in 490 cases.
Rescue Service Organisation
Distributed along the North Sea and Baltic coast of Germany are 54 stations. The active fleet is composed as follows:
3 Rescue vessels (26 knots) with daughter-boat and helicopter working platform,
17 Rescue vessels (20-23 knots) with daughter boat,
41 Rescue boats (16-35 knots).
All the activities of our rescue fleet are coordinated by our Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) in Bremen which is capable of direct radio communi-cation with each unit. In addition, the MRCC is linked by direct telephone with the Naval Air Arm SAR Centre to facilitate the co-operation with helicopters. In 2009, 219 SAR-operations beyond German waters were assisted.
Finances
Our institution received in 2009 a total of approx. Euro 55,9 Mio., from which voluntary donations in the amount of Euro 18,2 Mio. consist of:
76,3 % member contributions and gifts (including donations from municipal communities and list collections),
7,6 % condolence and anniversary donations,
4,9 % from collecting boats,
7,8 % donations of ship owners,
3,4 % voluntary compensations instead of legal fines.
